Dealing with Noisy Roommates: A Peaceful Solution

Identify the Noise

Noise problems in shared homes usually fall into three categories: scheduled noise (gaming, music, calls at specific times), habitual noise (alarm snoozing, heavy walking, door slamming), and social noise (parties, guests, group activities). Each requires a slightly different approach.

Before you say anything, track the noise for a week. Note the type, time, duration, and how it affects you. This converts 'you're always too loud' into specific, actionable feedback.

Solutions That Work

For scheduled noise: agree on quiet hours. Most flatshares work well with 10pm-8am as the quiet window. For habitual noise: invest in solutions together — door closers to prevent slamming, vibration pads for speakers, earplugs as a goodwill gesture. For alarm snoozers: negotiate a maximum snooze count. Three snoozes is reasonable; twelve is not.

Physical solutions help too: rugs absorb footstep noise, draft excluders reduce door-slamming, and white noise machines can mask intermittent sounds.

Document in HomeCo

Record your agreed quiet hours and noise rules in your HomeCo flatmate agreement. When rules are written down, they feel more official and are easier to reference. If the problem persists, you have a clear paper trail.
