Setting Up Shared Finances with Roommates: Step-by-Step

Choose Your System

There are three main approaches to shared finances in a flatshare. The joint account method: open a shared bank account where everyone contributes a fixed monthly amount. Bills are paid directly from this account. Simple, but requires trust. The individual tracking method: everyone pays bills from their own account and settles up at the end of the month. More flexible but requires more admin. The app-based method: use a dedicated app to log expenses, calculate splits, and track settlements. The best of both worlds.

What to Track

At minimum, track: rent (usually the biggest expense), council tax, electricity and gas, water, broadband, TV licence, and shared groceries or household supplies. Optional but recommended: contents insurance, cleaning products, and any subscriptions used by the whole house.

Set a monthly budget meeting to review spending and adjust contributions if bills are consistently higher or lower than expected.
