The Guide to Managing Shared Utilities With Roommates
Common Utilities in Shared Households
Most shared households need to manage electricity, gas, water, internet, and sometimes trash collection, parking, or streaming services. Each utility has its own billing cycle, account setup requirements, and usage patterns. Understanding what you're dealing with is the first step to managing it smoothly. Start by listing every recurring utility bill and noting the provider, average monthly cost, and whose name the account is in.
Setting Up Utility Accounts
When you first move in, determine which utilities need to be set up and whose name they'll be under. It's fairest to split account responsibilities — one person handles electricity, another handles internet, etc. — so no one person is responsible for collecting money for everything. When setting up accounts, make sure every roommate knows the login credentials and understands the billing cycle.
Splitting Utility Bills Fairly
Most utilities are split equally among roommates, but there are exceptions. If someone works from home and uses significantly more electricity, they might offer to pay a larger share. If one roommate has an electric vehicle they charge at home, that should be accounted for. Internet is usually split equally since everyone benefits equally. Track all utility payments in HomeCo so everyone can see the running balance at any time.
Handling Late Payments and Disputes
Set a clear deadline for utility payments — ideally 3-5 days before the bill is due. If someone is consistently late, have a direct conversation about it. Consider setting up automatic transfers or having one person handle all payments with others reimbursing them monthly. If someone moves out mid-cycle, calculate their share based on the number of days they were there, not a full month.
