Communication Rules for Flatmates That Actually Work

The Communication Framework

Effective flatmate communication rests on three pillars: transparency (everyone knows what's going on), timeliness (issues are raised promptly, not after weeks of resentment), and respect (disagreements are about problems, not people).

Establish a shared communication channel — a WhatsApp group, Discord server, or HomeCo's built-in messaging. Having one place for household matters keeps things organised and creates a record you can refer back to.

Rules to Live By

The 24-hour rule: if something bothers you, address it within 24 hours. Waiting longer lets resentment build. The direct approach: talk to your flatmate first, don't complain to other flatmates behind their back. The specific approach: 'The bins weren't taken out yesterday' not 'You never do your share'. The solution approach: always come with a proposed fix, not just a complaint.

Digital Communication

Use HomeCo to create shared announcements, send chore reminders, and log household decisions. Written communication creates accountability — 'I don't remember that conversation' doesn't work when it's in the app.
