Winter Preparation Checklist for Shared Homes

Winter can be tough on shared homes, but preparing ahead of time saves money on heating, prevents damage from cold weather, and keeps everyone comfortable through the coldest months of the year.

Heating system preparation should happen in early autumn. Test your heating system before the first cold snap, replace filters, and schedule professional maintenance if anything seems off. A broken heater in January is not something you want to experience.

Insulate your home by adding weatherstripping to doors and windows, using draft stoppers, and checking that attic or basement insulation is adequate. These small investments pay for themselves in reduced heating bills within one season.

Prepare an emergency kit for power outages and severe weather. Include flashlights, batteries, a battery-powered radio, blankets, non-perishable food, water, and a first aid kit. Every roommate should know where it is stored.

Adjust household habits for winter. Agree on a reasonable thermostat setting that balances comfort and cost, typically around 20 degrees Celsius during the day and lower at night or when nobody is home. Wear layers before cranking the heat.

Stock up on winter supplies including ice melt for walkways, a snow shovel if applicable, and extra towels for wet boots and coats near the entrance. Preventing water and salt damage to floors saves money long term.
