Setting Up a Roommate Emergency Fund Checklist

An emergency fund isn't just for individuals — shared homes face unexpected costs too. A broken boiler, a sudden rent increase, or a deposit top-up can strain relationships if there's no plan. This checklist helps you set one up properly.

Step 1: Discuss as a group. Agree on why the fund exists (repairs, unexpected bills, temporary rent shortfalls) and what it shouldn't be used for (personal expenses, holidays).

Step 2: Set a contribution amount. A common starting point is £20-50 per person per month. Adjust based on your household income and the age/condition of your home.

Step 3: Choose where to hold the money. Options include a dedicated joint bank account, a separate savings account in one person's name (with full transparency), or a tracked pool managed through HomeCo.

Step 4: Define withdrawal rules. Require agreement from a majority (or all) roommates before any payout. Document every contribution and withdrawal.

Step 5: Review quarterly. Check the balance, discuss whether contributions need adjusting, and confirm everyone is up to date. HomeCo's expense tracking makes this straightforward.
