Roommate Home Safety Inspection Checklist

Safety in a shared home isn't just about locking doors. It's about making sure everyone knows what to do in an emergency, where the safety equipment is, and who's responsible for keeping it all in working order.

Fire safety: test smoke alarms monthly, ensure every bedroom has a working alarm, check fire extinguisher expiry dates, keep escape routes clear, and agree on a meeting point outside.

Electrical safety: don't overload sockets, check for frayed cables, ensure the fuse box is accessible to all roommates, and know how to turn off the mains supply.

Security: check all window locks, ensure the front door locks properly from inside, install a door chain or viewer, and agree on a policy for spare keys.

Emergency preparedness: create a shared emergency contact list, agree on what to do if there's a gas leak or flood, know the location of the stopcock and fuse box, and keep a basic first aid kit stocked.
