The goal is not to label everything. It is to make a small set of repeatable actions easier to locate while preserving the oven’s original safety information.
Start with the user and the manual
Ask the resident with low vision how they distinguish controls now and which tasks need support. They may prefer raised dots, high-contrast marks, large print, audio, a phone app, or human confirmation. Do not apply Braille or tactile labels based on another person’s guess.
Read the oven manual and identify surfaces that become hot, move, illuminate, or sense touch. A marker that is safe on a cool control panel may be unsafe beside a vent or on a removable knob. If the manufacturer prohibits adhesives or modifications, use a separate reference overlay or other approved method.
The American Foundation for the Blind’s guide to appliance accessibility discusses tactile markings as one possible modification when controls are not usable nonvisually. The U.S. Access Board’s standards also emphasize operable controls, but a private home project should be tailored to the resident rather than presented as automatic legal compliance.
Build a minimal control map
Choose one anchor point that cannot be confused with Start, Cancel, or a heat setting. From that anchor, map only essential functions such as Bake, temperature increase and decrease, Start, Cancel, and Timer. Use marker shapes or positions that remain distinct by touch. Keep an accessible written or audio key.
For a knob, mark the fixed panel around it if the manual permits. Do not put a dot on a knob whose pointer rotates, because the dot’s meaning will move with it. For a flat touch panel, confirm that a marker will not trigger adjacent capacitive controls or hide status information.
Clean the approved surface and apply one marker at a time. Stop if adhesive spreads, a marker sits loose, or the placement creates ambiguity. A loose dot near food or a hot surface is not a finished adaptation.
Test with power or heat off
Run a dry test before cooking. The user should locate the anchor, name each control, simulate a temperature change, find Cancel, and return to the starting position. A housemate can read the display during setup, but should not take over the test or rush it.
Then perform one supervised low-risk operating test using the manufacturer’s normal instructions. Confirm the selected mode and temperature through an accessible channel. If there is no independent way to verify the display, document the agreed confirmation method rather than pretending the tactile map solves the whole interface.
Stop using the map if a marker shifts, the panel is replaced, a software update changes control positions, or the user reports uncertainty. Remove adhesive only by a method safe for the finish.
Protect the adaptation in a shared kitchen
Tell every resident that the markers are functional, not residue to be scrubbed away. Add “do not remove tactile markers” to the oven cleaning checklist. Assign one person to check that the markers remain secure and aligned after deep cleaning.

Should every oven control receive a tactile dot?
No. Too many markers can make the panel harder to interpret. Start with the functions chosen by the user and preserve a clear anchor.
