Close Form I-983 When a STEM OPT Job Ends Early
Freeze the final training facts, secure the employer signature, submit the final evaluation to the DSO, and retain proof without exposing immigration records.
When a STEM OPT training opportunity ends early, complete the final evaluation on Form I-983 with the employer and submit it to the designated school official within the applicable deadline. The current ICE instructions state that the student must submit the final evaluation within 10 days after the training concludes. Confirm the process with your DSO because a job ending can also trigger separate reporting and unemployment-day concerns.
Do not wait for the last paycheck, equipment return, or a new offer before starting the academic reporting handoff. Those events may follow different timelines.
Freeze the facts on the last training day
Record the employer's legal name, training site, supervisor, final training date, and reason the training ended in your private file. Compare them with the Form I-983 already on record. Ask the DSO how to correct any discrepancy rather than silently rewriting earlier dates.
Open the official ICE Form I-983 instructions and use the current form required by your school. The instructions explain acceptable signatures and the evaluation sections. They also distinguish the student's evaluation from the employer official's certification. A roommate, recruiter, or new employer cannot certify the old employer's training.
Create a ten-day closeout lane with four checkpoints: draft evaluation, employer review and signature, DSO submission, and receipt. Put the actual due date beside each checkpoint. “Sent to supervisor” is not the same as “submitted to DSO.”
The evaluation should address the training against the goals in the plan. Keep it accurate and specific. If the employer will not respond, contact the DSO promptly and retain your attempts. Do not copy a generic evaluation from another student or ask a housemate to improve claims they cannot verify.
Separate immigration reporting from household logistics
A job ending can change income, commute, schedule, and housing plans. Discuss those practical effects with housemates, but do not turn the household chat into an immigration file. Your SEVIS ID, signatures, compensation details, passport information, and employer identifiers do not belong in a shared task.
If printing at home, collect every page immediately and clear stored jobs. If scanning, verify that the destination is your account rather than a housemate's folder. Delete local temporary copies only in line with your record-retention advice. Never assume that deleting a shared-device file removes backups or sync copies.
Keep one private submission proof pair: the exact final evaluation sent and evidence that the DSO received it. An email timestamp, portal confirmation, or response may serve, depending on the school's process. Ask the DSO what records you should retain and whether a new Form I-983 is required for a later qualifying employer.
For a broader arrival-record workflow, HomeCo's guide to auditing an international student's I-94 shows the same useful boundary: the student owns the official record while a housemate may help with time, transport, or a private work area.
How HomeCo helps
Use HomeCo for a private deadline task and household consequences, not for the form itself. Set reminders for employer follow-up and DSO submission. If finances are affected, create a separate house discussion about the next rent date and temporary spending changes without adding visa documents or legal conclusions.
A housemate can reserve the shared printer, leave the desk free for a scheduled call, or cover an agreed chore during a DSO appointment. Assign those actions explicitly. Do not list a housemate as responsible for “fixing status” or “approving the form.”
Close the HomeCo task only after the submission proof pair exists. Then add any DSO-confirmed next deadline as a new task rather than leaving a vague, permanent immigration reminder.
Frequently asked questions
Is telling my DSO that the job ended enough?
Do not assume so. Ask the DSO which reports and documents are required, including the final evaluation and any SEVIS Portal update. Preserve confirmation for each completed step.
Can I use an electronic signature?
ICE's current I-983 instructions describe accepted electronic-signature formats. Your student and employer signatures still must be made by the appropriate people, and your school may specify a submission method.
What if the employer delays the signature?
Follow up in writing and contact the DSO before the deadline. Provide facts and copies of your attempts. Do not backdate, reproduce, or create an employer signature.
