Roommate Smell Issues: How to Address It Respectfully

Dealing with unpleasant smells from a roommate's room or habits? Here's how to have the conversation without ruining the relationship.

It's one of the trickiest conversations in shared living: someone's habits are creating smells that affect the whole house. Whether it's cooking with strong spices, a gym bag that never gets aired out, or a room that's past due for a clean, the issue needs addressing — but how?

Start with empathy. Most people genuinely don't realise their habits are affecting others. What's obvious to you might be completely invisible to them. Assume good intentions before you say anything.

Choose the right time and setting. Don't bring it up in front of guests, during an argument, or via a passive-aggressive sticky note. A calm, private conversation works best. Try: 'Hey, I wanted to mention something and I hope you don't take it the wrong way…'

Be specific but kind. Instead of 'your room stinks', try 'I've noticed a strong odour coming from near your door — would you mind airing things out a bit?'. Focus on the impact, not the person.

Suggest practical solutions together: more frequent laundry, a bathroom fan timer, opening windows regularly, or a shared cleaning schedule. Sometimes small changes make a huge difference.

If the issue persists, revisit it gently but firmly. Shared living means shared responsibility for the environment — and that includes how the home smells. Use HomeCo to set up a household cleaning schedule that keeps things fresh for everyone.
