Measure the Device, Not the Roommate

To measure one device’s electricity cost, plug a watt meter into the wall, connect the device to the meter, and record its kilowatt-hours over a representative period. Multiply those kilowatt-hours by the electricity rate on the household bill. This produces a defensible device cost without guessing from wattage or arguing over how long someone used it.

Use only a meter rated for the outlet and the device’s electrical load. A basic plug-in meter is suitable for many cord-connected items, such as a portable air conditioner, gaming computer, dehumidifier, or mini fridge. It is not appropriate for a hardwired appliance, a 240-volt appliance, or any load beyond its rating. Do not use a damaged outlet, loose adapter, or extension-cord chain.

Run a Representative Meter Test

Start with the utility bill. Copy the price per kilowatt-hour, including variable energy charges that actually rise with consumption. Keep fixed account fees separate because one device did not cause them. If the bill uses several rate periods, note the price that applies while the device operates.

Reset the plug-in meter, connect the device, and leave it under normal settings. Test long enough to capture its operating cycle. A lamp may need only several typical evenings, while a refrigerator or air conditioner should run across multiple days with ordinary door openings or weather. Do not alter another roommate’s settings merely to make the result look lower or higher.

At the end, record elapsed hours and kWh. Calculate:

Turn the Reading Into a Fair Split

Share a photo of the starting and ending screen, the test dates, and the rate used. Agree in advance whether the measurement is informational or will change reimbursements. That prevents a surprise charge after the fact.

A device-specific reimbursement works best for a genuinely personal, material load. Shared devices should usually remain in the normal household split. If a personal appliance benefits everyone, such as a dehumidifier protecting a damp common area, discuss that benefit before assigning its entire cost to its owner.

Repeat a test when seasons, settings, occupancy, or equipment change. Avoid treating one hot week as a year-round average. Also distinguish measured consumption from total bill impact. Taxes, minimum charges, demand charges, and time-of-use pricing may require a closer look at the bill.
