Then identify the transmitter and frequency designated for that location. The National Weather Service warns in its guide to using SAME receivers not to choose a louder or clearer station that is not designated as a SAME channel for your area, because the expected alerts may not arrive. Follow the radio manufacturer’s manual because menu names and code capacity differ.

Set the clock, language, alert tone, and event options. Avoid disabling unfamiliar warning categories merely to reduce noise. Instead, begin with the manufacturer’s defaults and discuss any optional alert changes as a household. Keep phone alerts and local emergency notifications enabled too. No single channel is guaranteed to work in every outage.

Test the radio where alerts must wake people

Place the receiver where its alarm can be heard in bedrooms, not behind a television or inside a cabinet. Extend and orient the antenna, then listen to the ordinary broadcast to evaluate reception.
