Place Magnetic Screen Closures Around an Implanted Heart Device

Map and relocate strong magnetic screen closures when a resident or regular guest has an implanted heart device.

If a resident or regular visitor has a pacemaker or implantable defibrillator, do not install a magnetic screen closure by guesswork. Keep the product packaged, identify every magnet and likely body-contact point, and ask the person to follow advice from their clinician and device manufacturer. If safe clearance cannot be maintained during ordinary use, choose a nonmagnetic closure.

Map magnets against real movement

Lay out the unopened or deactivated screen away from the person with the implant. From the specifications, identify magnets in the center seam, bottom weights, tiebacks, and storage straps. Create a magnet-path map showing where those parts sit when the screen is open, closed, bunched, carried, and stored.

Then map ordinary movement through the doorway. Consider someone holding groceries, steadying themselves on the frame, carrying a child, using a mobility aid, or untangling a pet leash. The relevant question is not whether the installed seam looks far from the chest when untouched. It is whether a magnet can approach the implant during predictable use, maintenance, or a gust of wind.

The FDA’s safety page on magnets and implanted medical devices recommends keeping consumer electronics that may create magnetic interference at least six inches from implanted devices. A screen product is different from a phone, so residents should obtain product-specific and medical guidance instead of treating that distance as automatic approval.

Choose an implant-aware route

Ask the affected person what information they want shared and who should help review the doorway. Their medical details remain private. The household only needs the agreed boundary, such as “use the side door” or “no magnetic closure on this opening.” Make that implant-aware route convenient, lit, unlocked when appropriate, and free of clutter.

Contact the implant manufacturer or clinician with the screen manufacturer’s magnet information if available. Also ask the screen maker about magnet strength, locations, and nonmagnetic alternatives. Do not test interference by bringing a magnet near the implant. Do not rely on a phone compass, refrigerator magnet, or another improvised measurement.

If the product is already installed, keep the affected person away from it until guidance is obtained. Secure pets another way and mark the doorway without posting medical information. A tension rod, zipper, hook-and-loop closure, or conventional hinged screen may solve the insect problem without introducing the same question, but each option still needs landlord approval and an accessible route.

Include visitors and maintenance. A screen bundled to the side for winter can put its magnets at chest height, while removed panels stored in a hall closet can surprise someone reaching in.

Review the route again whenever the panel is moved or replaced. A different model may put magnets at different heights.

Can we test the screen by walking past it once?

No. Deliberate exposure is not a safe household test. Use device-manufacturer, clinician, FDA, and screen-manufacturer guidance.

Do we need to tell every roommate the diagnosis?

No. Share the practical doorway rule and emergency information the person consents to share. Keep medical details restricted.

What if the landlord already approved the screen?

Installation approval does not answer a medical-device question. Pause the installation and select a safer closure if clearance and handling cannot be made reliable.
