Level a Rocking Washing Machine Before the Next Spin Cycle

A washer that rocks should be stopped, unloaded, and checked for stable contact at all four feet before another fast spin. Leveling can solve movement caused by an uneven setup, but it cannot repair a damaged floor, suspension, bearing, or shipping hardware mistake.

Run the manufacturer’s installation cycle or a small balanced load. Stay nearby through spin. Stop immediately if the washer moves, bangs repeatedly, leaks, smells hot, or makes a new grinding sound. A stable cabinet with violent internal banging points beyond a simple leveling issue.

Mark the original floor position with removable tape if the appliance tends to migrate. If it crosses that mark again after a correct leveling attempt, schedule service. Repeatedly turning feet is not a substitute for diagnosing a failing component or weak floor.

Agree on what “fixed” means

In a shared laundry area, one quiet cycle can lead someone to declare victory too soon. Record the load used for the test, whether the lock nuts were tightened, and whether movement returned. Use a weekly house meeting to assign the service call or landlord message if the result is uncertain.
