Keep the bill's exact service dates. A “January bill” may include December usage, and the due date has no role in determining occupancy.

Know When Not to Use Degree Days

Skip this method if the bill is estimated, the meter period is unclear, the heating system uses a different energy source, or the move date did not change who was financially responsible. Also skip it when the amount at stake is too small to justify a complicated estimate.

Heating degree days describe outdoor conditions. Solar gain, insulation, thermostat choices, vacancies, and fireplace use can weaken the relationship between weather and consumption. If roommates disagree, run both a person-day split and a degree-day split. Agree in advance that a small difference will use the simpler result.
