End Google Maps Location Sharing When Housemates Separate

Stop every Google Maps location share that no longer has a clear purpose, then verify each person or link separately. Moving out does not automatically end location sharing. The clean handoff is for the person whose location is visible to review their own account, stop direct shares, disable active link shares, and check whether location requests or notifications still need attention.

Do this privately on your own phone or computer. A housemate should never need your password or device PIN to confirm that access has ended.

Review direct shares person by person

Open Google Maps, select your profile picture, and open Location sharing. The screen lists people who can currently see your real-time location through Maps. Select the departing housemate, then choose Stop. Repeat for any account connected only because of the former living arrangement.

Google’s official location-sharing instructions cover both starting and stopping a share. The computer route leads through Google Account Location Sharing settings, which is useful if the app is unavailable.

Do not treat blocking a contact, deleting a text thread, or removing someone from phone contacts as a substitute. Those actions concern different services. Use the Location sharing screen because it shows the permission that matters.

If you shared with several people for different reasons, avoid a blanket assumption. A sibling’s travel-safety share may still be wanted while a former housemate’s indefinite share is not. Confirm each entry against its current purpose.

Turn off links and related alerts

A link share is different from a share directed to a Google Account. If you created a location-sharing link for a moving day, party, or late-night check-in, return to Location sharing and stop that link. Anyone who still possesses an active link may be able to use it during its validity period, so deleting the message that contained it is not enough.

Also inspect location-sharing notifications. Google Maps can notify a person when someone arrives at or leaves a place if the applicable sharing arrangement supports it. Ending the underlying location share stops associated notifications, but it is still sensible to review the notification section and confirm no obsolete setup remains.

Then consider adjacent apps separately. Google Maps settings do not cancel location access in Find My Device, a mobile carrier service, a family-safety app, or a social platform. Make a short list of services the household actually used rather than guessing that one switch governs all of them.

Verify from the account that was sharing

After tapping Stop, close and reopen Location sharing. The former housemate should no longer appear as someone receiving your location. If a link was active, confirm it is no longer listed. You can also check the same Google Account on the web to reduce the chance that you edited a secondary account by mistake.

Account confusion is common on phones with work, school, and personal Google accounts. Check the avatar and email address before changing anything. If two household members each shared location, each person must stop their own outgoing share. One person cannot use possession of the other person’s phone as a normal offboarding method.

Avoid asking the former housemate to send a screenshot of a blank map. Your own sharing settings are the authoritative place to verify what your account transmits, and they reveal less private information.
